" When you strike at a King/Autocrat, you must kill it" att R.W. Emerson, Machiavelli and others --

quote amended from

The proverb "when you strike at a king, you must kill him"  is attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, but Emerson was expressing an idea that goes back at least to Machiavelli, who advises in The Prince that "men ought either to be well treated or crushed, because they can avenge themselves of lighter injuries, of more serious ones they cannot; therefore the injury that is to be done to a man ought to be of such a kind that one does not stand in fear of revenge."
